CISD, SISD staff and faculty play in charity basketball game

There was a basketball showdown on the court between Canutillo and Socorro Independent School Districts Thursday night, but it wasn’t the students showing off their skills.

Faculty and staff laced up their shoes at Canutillo High School for a friendly rivalry game to help collect tennis shoes.

‘Shots for Shoes’ collected more than 200 pair of tennis shoes for CISD students who need them the most.

The event was a continued effort from both districts that started last fall.

SISD hosted a similar event, ‘Warm the Soul’, and invited CISD staff for a game of flag football. Dozens of shoes were donated for SISD students.

Superintendents for both districts were in attendance for Thursday night’s rematch in basketball.

SISD superintendent Dr. Jose Espinoza took a break on the bench as he cheered for his team.

Dr. Pedro Galviz, CISD superintendent, told ABC-7 he wants the collaboration to grow.

“We want to bring in more school districts. Ysleta, El Paso, we’re challenging you,” said Dr. Galaviz.

“It’s all for the kids, that’s why we’re here.”

Students who will be given shoes were selected from every campus of the Canutillo district through Campus Parent Liaisons and the CISD Student Support Services office.
