New Juarez soccer team name, crest unveiled
Ciudad Juarez’s new pro soccer team unveiled its nickname and crest on Tuesday night.
The team’s nickname is “Los Bravos,” meaning “The Tough Ones,” and the bright red and green crest features part of a galloping horse above a green sun.
After the name was announced, the club tweeted, “SOMOS BRAVOS , SOMOS JUREZ , SOMOS FUTBOL…” which translates to “We are tough, We Are Juarez, We are football (soccer).”
FC Juarez is owned by MountainStar Sports group, along with several prominent Juarez families.
Alejandra de la Vega, president of FC Juarez, said the entire team will be introduced next week and will be wearing the team’s uniform. Joaquin Alonso from El Paso, Texas introduced today as part of the FC Juarez Squad.
“The idea is for this to be the continuation of my father’s dream,” de la Vega said in reference to previous teams owned by the family, like the Juarez Cobras.
De la Vega elaborated on the name, Los Bravos, saying it was fan Victor Manuel Gonzalez who suggested the name because of the Rio Bravo, which is something Juarez shares with El Paso. The Rio Bravo is known as the Rio Grande in the U.S.
De la Vega also said that some fans say Bravos represent the toughness of Juarenzes who never give up.
Season ticket sales will go on sale this Thursday on the team’s website, www.fcjuarez.com.
Tickets will also be sold in some S-Mart stores.
Individual tickets go on sale Tuesday, July 21 and the inaugural game of the season will be July 25 against the Lobos from the University of Puebla.
The club will be part of the Ascenso MX League, the second pro level of the Mexican football league system.
Matches will be played in the stadium of the Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez.
MountainStar Sports, which owns the Triple-A baseball El Paso Chihuahuas, announced last year it was attempting to get a Major League Soccer team in El Paso.
