Arrest affidavit reveals details of West El Paso home invasion

A 24-year-old has been arrested in Bexar County in connection with a West El Paso home invasion on July 7.

Gerald Dunn was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Bexar County on a warrant obtained by El Paso Police. Dunn is identified in online Bexar County court records as being homeless.

Dunn was booked into the Bexar County Detention facility as a wanted subject and is awaiting extradition proceedings to be brought to El Paso.

El Paso Police officers on morning of July 7 met with the 91-year-old man and 88-year-old woman who lived at a home on Dede Lane and said they were victims of an aggravated assault. The married couple told police they were on their morning walk close to their home when the suspect allegedly followed them to their home and entered their home.

Police say that while inside the home the suspect demanded money and assaulted the 91-year old male.

According to the complaint affidavit, a person, identified as the complaining witness, arrived at the Dede Lane residence at around 6:40 a.m. To provide transportation to the resident. The person parked in the driveway and as he approached the home he heard someone yelling for help from inside the residence.

As the person approached the door, the suspect, later identified as Dunn, ran out of the home, grabbed the person by the shirt while yelling to get into the home. The complaining witness saw Dunn holding a knife in his right hand and the complaining witness attempted to pull away from Dunn, which caused the complaining witness to fall to the ground.

As he fell, he dropped his keys and cell phone. The affidavit states Dunn picked up the keys, got into the complaining witness’ vehicle, and left north on Dede, toward Rim Road. The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

El Paso Police were able to find two latent fingerprints at the scene that were made by Dunn and could not have been made by anyone else, according to the affidavit.

The complaining witness was shown a six-person photo array and positively identified Dunn as having committed the offense.

El Paso Police, FBI and U.S. Marshal’s Service were involved in the search for Dunn.
