Boxing: Chavez Jr Wins by Unanimous Decision

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat Marcos Reyes by unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center.

The three judges scored it 98-91, 97-92 and 96-93.

Chavez Jr opened up on a tear. He controlled the fight early and seemed to be back in a groove following an ugly loss toAndrzej Fonfara in April.

Reyes, however, stayed strong and worked his way back into the fight. Despite landing several big shots, he just couldn’t shake Chavez.

Chavez Jr was simply too big for Reyes. He answered Reyes throughout the match by bombarding him with punches to close out rounds and keep the fight in his control.

It managed to somehow be a dominating performance by Chavez Jr and simultaneously be unimpressive.

The crowd booed Chavez Jr when he was introduced, but cheered his father when he was shown on the big screen and, interestingly enough, cheered Reyes.

Chavez Jr says he injured his hand during the fight which prevented him from knocking Reyes out. He said he believes his hand could be broken.

“I connected with the best punches to the chin and to the body,” Chavez Jr said. “I hurt him, but I couldn’t finish him because I hurt my hand.”

Chavez Jr improves to 49-2-1 in his career.

Reyes drops to 33-3.
