Chihuahuas Late Rally Falls Short
The El Paso Chihuahuas’ late comeback attempt fell one run short in their 5-4 loss to the Sacramento River CatsMondayat Raley Field. El Paso didn’t have a hit until Tim Federowicz led off the top of the eighth inning with a clean single to right field.
Sacramento starter Nik Turley pitched six hitless innings before turning over thecombined no-hitter attempt to the bullpen. Turley struck out eight of the game’s first nine hitters.
The hit by Federowicz started a four-run, nine-batter rally, with RBIs coming from Cody Decker, Benji Gonzalez and Alex Dickerson. The Chihuahuas had a two-out hit by Casey McElroy and a two-out walk by Jake Goebbert in the ninth but did not score, as Erik Cordier finished his eighth save of the season.
The Chihuahuas are now 2-3 through the first five games of their 12-game, three-city road trip. Aaron Northcraft and Leonel Campos tossed shutout outings out of El Paso’s bullpenMonday.
Jamie Quirk was thrown out of the game in the bottom of the fifth after arguing that Juan Perez’ ground ball double near first base was foul. It was Quirk’s first ejection as El Paso’s manager.
