UTEP’s MJ McFarland out for season after failing drug test
UTEP tight end MJ McFarland will not play this season after failing a NCAA drug test, according to UTEP coach Sean Kugler.
The NCAA has suspended McFarland due to the failed drug test.
McFarland transferred to UTEP from Texas after completing his degree in three years at Texas and redshirting a year at Texas.
He has one year of eligibility to play Division 1 football.
McFarland, a former football standout at El Dorado High School, was the first scholarship player from El Paso to play in a game for the Longhorns since the 1980s.
McFarland released a statement on twitter: “Just to clarify, I failed a NCAA drug test due to a banned substance that I was not aware of. I took a supplement that was supposed to help aid the process of coming back from a concussion I received during spring ball. It was not used to enhance performance due to the fact I was on bed rest for two weeks, trying to heal and get back to the norm. That is it. However, rules are rules and I am currently suffering the consequences. Therefore, I would like to thank you UTEP and staff for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love but unfortunately, this is just another obstacle that God will guide me through. Very respectfully, MJ McFarland.”
