Clint ISD approves projects from $80 million bond

Voters in the Clint Independent School District approved an $80 million bond back in May.

On Thursday trustees signed off on projects that bond money will be used for.

Logistically it’s the largest district in the region and officials say the money is not only needed now but for the future of the district.

When this bond went up for a vote in the may elections
76 percent of the residents voted for it.

District officials say this money can provide students with a 21st century education.

“We had a facilities study done looking at all of our facilities, educational facilities throughout the district,” said Morris Alderidge.

Alderidge is the assistant superintedant for Clint ISD. He overlooks some of the projects that will be using bond money recently approved by district residents.

He tells ABC-7 some of the buildings in the district are 30 to 40 years old.

“You’re looking at roof repairs. We are looking at all of our existing swamp coolers and replacing those with some refrigerated air so that none our students will be in classrooms with swamp coolers and that was the No. 1 concern of parents,” said Alderidge.

Alderidge told ABC-7 money from the project will also have other uses besides repairing old buildings.

“We also looked at our educational programs. We’re looking at adding some vocational programs in some of high schools and adding some classroom wings at a couple of elementary schools that so we can take students out of portables and put those students in a permanent building,” said Alderidge.

The district feels the funds will also help them for future students as well.

“We looked at the growth that’s projected in our area over the next five to ten years and we’re positioning ourselves so that if we have growth we believe we can handle that growth,” said Alderidge.

The $80 million will also hit Clint residents in the pocket. The bond comes with a 7 cent property tax increase.
