it’s hard to turn on the t-v and not see a story about olympic champ bruce jenner now preferring to be called caitlyn jenner. especially after winning the arthur ashe courage award last week. a day later … we interviewed a trans-gender student from n-m-s-u about the issues she and caitlyn face. gerald was not a fan. “we are created as male or female. it is biology we have to follow not our feelings. “people like th one who was interviewed and bruce jenner and many others out there need to realize that. “furthermore when a person like bruce gets an award like that for nothing but dressing like a woman that is a slap in the face to every hero out there. “you should be ashamed of yourself for promoting and glorifying this.” gerald we appreciate your feedback … but i do have an issue with that last line. there’s a common misconception that because we report on something … we support it or are promoting or glorifying it. that’s wrong. yes we report on topics that might make some uneasy … but that doesn’t mean we support or oppose gay marriage, gun rights, abortion or any other controversial topic. are job is to share both sides … or reflect a slice of life … and the rest is up to the viewer. with that particular story our goal was to shed light on a dilemma facing newsrooms across the country … do we refer to jenner as a he or she? the associated press stylebook advises we refer to people as they want to be called. so, that’s what you’re seeing all over the country. legally jenner is a he … but he clearly would prefer to be referred to as she. that’s something even a transgender therapist can struggle with. . maria: it gets confusing.”) these are issue that aren’t going to suddenly disappear and in some case we will report on them … in others we won’t. but whether we do or don’t … that should never be interpreted as support or opposition. rick cabrera. abc-7 listens. welcome back, it is now . flooding remains a threat in many communities across the bay area. rivers are running
