Groups Help Low-Income Students Get School Supplies

folan. and i’m josie ortegon. tax free weekend is underway in texas and new mexico. a group of local volunteers is making sure students in the “segundo barrio” have the school supplies they need to start the year. abc-7’s andrew j. polk has the story. :08 :25 :38 1:17 in the segundo barrio, they’re making a big push ahead of the start of the school year… to get needy kids and deserving families ready. “we have our back to school bash happening. and we started at 9 o’clock this morning with, i think we’ve got almost 100 volunteers registered. but we pre- registered for 600 backpacks. and each backpack is filled with school supplies.” “he at the houchen community center, they’re doing a lot of the things that the kids will need to succeed in school for this upcoming school year, including providing them backpacks with pen, paper, notebooks, all the supplies they’ll need to get started right along with other services to help them start the school year.” ” a mother of two children, knowing that back to school can be very stressful, we wanted to make sure that what we provided to the families was purposeful, and that impacted their family and helped them be successful in school. so we brainstormed last year all the services that you need as a parent to get your kid ready for school. and this year we were actually able to execute on those with our uniforms, our backpacks. we even have free haircuts and free physicals for all the students going into athletics this year.” meanwhile i northeast el paso, they’re making a push to get the schools themselves ready for the things the kids will need, hoping to supply four or more of the neediest schools in the area. “this is our forth year. the first year, we had enough supplies to help some of the kids in two schools. the last two years, we were able to we think fully support three schools with just mounds and mounds of supplies. it’s amazing how generous the folks in the northeast are… mainly it’s the supplies that the schools are concerned with getting.” andrew j. polk, abc-7. meanwhile, in northeast el paso, they’re making a push to get the schools themselves ready for what the kids will need… hoping to supply 4 or more of the neediest schools in the area. ” andrew j.
