Hundreds attending 2-day space symposium in Las Cruces
The International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Space Flight is being held in Las Cruces at the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum from Oct 7 -8.
Hundreds gathered Wednesday to listen to some of the brightest minds in the space flight industry. But for such a growing industry, could that mean more competition for New Mexico’s spaceport?
During a briefing, the airport director for Spaceport Colorado shared that they’re expecting to get their FAA license by next year.
Curator of the event Pat Hynes says while New Mexico will have one more competitor, she says Colorado will be good for the state.
“Colorado will have their businesses we have ours and there’s plenty of room for all of us,” Hynes said. “We just have to keep moving forward.”
“There will be competition I expect that and certainly right now I think we have more spaceport then we have need,” David Ruppel, airport director for Spaceport Colorado said. “B ut those kinds of developments don’t happen over night.”
Ruppel added that each spaceport has different advantages and disadvantages, such as location and experimental type of work. He says he’s hoping there can be cooperation between both in the future.
