Another town could benefit if Sunland Park, N.M., disincorporates

A petition filed Oct. 9 by community members to have the city of Sunland Park disincorporated could benefit Santa Teresa.

About a year ago, proposals by Sunland Park caused some Santa Teresa residents to fear the possible annexation.

Monday, Santa Teresa resident Kraig Carpenter told ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom many Sunland Park residents and Santa Teresa residents would be in favor of disincorporating Sunland Park.

If it goes through, he says his home, along with others, would no longer be in danger of being annexed by Sunland Park.

Carpenter’s home is only a half a mile away from a vacant lot where annexation could take place.

Carpenter says he fears living under Sunland Park would dramatically raise taxes. He says the scandals that have shaken the city was his tipping point.
