closing arguments begin today in the trial of a former eastwood high teacher accused of having sex with students. christopher miranda was 24- years-old when he allegedly had sex with three girls between the ages of 16 and 17. the jury listened to a recorded conversation between an ysleta i- s-d employee and miranda yesterday. in it, miranda allegedly admits to having sex with three students. also — a victim testified how miranda allegedly took her to his home — where he lived with his parents — and sexually assaulted her in his bedroom. another case continuing today… this time for a murder that happened 38 years ago. 76-year-old lisbeth garrett is accused of killing her husband back in 19-77. prosecutors say the former eastwood high school teacher and her son, roger, beat and stabbed fort bliss army major chester garrett in their east el paso home. roger was sentenced to 40 years in prison almost exactly 2 years ago. again, that trial continuing today. we’ll have more details on that and the miranda trial. check out k-v- i-a-dot-com and our noon broadcast for more information as it develops. a new mexico school bus driver is being held without bond after he’s accused of having sex with a 15-year- old student. police say 26-year- old darien pete met the girl during his route to and from arrowhead park early college high school. detectives learned that the girl and pete regularly communicated through social media and text messaging. the girl’s mother says she discovered social media posts between the two over the weekend. posts that appeared to be sexual in nature. the chaparral man is now facing charges of two counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor. after months of negotiations, it finally happened. el paso children’s hospital and university medical center are moving forward…together. abc-7’s ashlie rodriguez breaks down the joint plan between the two hospitals. greater accountability, greater oversight county judge veronica escobar expects a new ceo and a new board will be in place at children’s by january. umc’s board will have a hand in selecting both. – umc is the sole corporate member to children’s. – this means umc, along with children’s board, have oversight over children’s budgets. – over its business plans – and over any contract over $250- thousand. children’s appears to have given up quite a bit of independence — but umc, hence el paso county taxpayers, gave up a lot. “we made concessions that wer important to children’s. the concessions were really with the view that to ensure that the folks on the children’s side that things wouldn’t be changed willy nilly.” for more than a year, umc has said children’s owes it $100 million dollars. this plan requires children’s to pay back $15-million — an $85 million dollar loss for umc. umc says it will be paid back last — after all the other debts are paid. just sent out a statement saying… “this has been an extremely long road for all of us, umc board chair steve degroat said in a statement especially for the people of el paso. while there were many obstacles along the way, everyone stayed positive… the dream the voters approved became a reality when el paso children’s hospital opened. ceo mark herber said. today, that dream remains alive and full of hope … other debts by children include $10 million to texas tech. this will have to be paid in full — with a $2-million-dollar down payment– the rest paid back over a three year period with a 4-point-5- percent interest rate. esocbar expects a closing hearing by mid- november. and children’s to exit bankruptcy by december. the man who allegedly kidnapped an elderly woman from her new mexico home now has a face. this is the man police say is behind the kidnapping. he’s 42-year-old andrew serna. the woman says after she was rescued from serna she discovered items missing from her home a warrant has been issued for his arrest, but as of right now, he’s still on the loose. dona ana county sheriffs say the warrant is for charges of false imprisonment, residential burglary, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence. mayor oscar leeser and the el paso city manager say they’re looking for a company to build that huge downtown arena approved by voters. the 180-million dollar arena will be located in downtown el paso. the bids from interested companies are due december 9th. the company that is chosen will be in charge of building the arena and developing a business plan – including finding a tenant and naming rights. new mexico’s immigrant driver’s license law isn’t going anywhere. one of the state’s most powerful democratic legislators say even if it did make it to the senate floor, there wouldn’t be enough votes to pass the proposal. the law allows immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally to still obtain new mexico driver’s licenses. it’s a law republican governor susana martinez has tried to get rid of. martinez campaigned to repeal it last year. she says it opens up new mexico to fraud. but since taking office, the proposal to end the law failed to pass the state legislature. as breast cancer awareness month continues– one nmsu student is sharing her story and her advice to women of all ages. good morning el paso’s denise olivas is live with more… denise? the 25-year-old fuul-time student and mother of two says she didn’t have the typical symptoms. in fact she says it was her persistence that led two the discovery of two 5-milimeter sized tumors. the woman did not want to show her face on camera. but she will be talking to students today at nmsu at an event called “girl talk”. this is al part of the university’s annual “toug enough to wear pink” breast cance awareness campaign. she says she never had any visible lumps– just some pain in her chest. her doctor first told her it was stress. but she requested further testing– the two tumors found were cancerous. she’s now gone through surgery and chemotherapy: “it really just felt like…and i knew something was wrong” the mother of two is in full remission. she encourages women of all ages and backgrounds to listen to your body. the event is heappening today at the corbett center auditorium at 5pm. and the tough enough to wear pink annual luncheon takes place october 22. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams…
