YISD Teacher Memorial
A memorial is happening today for the longtime YISD teacher, board member, and coach, Deby Lewis. Lewis lost her battle with cancer last week. She was 63 years old. Now friends, family, and former students will get their chance to say goodbye. The memorial is today at 4 p.m. at Eastwood Church of Christ located at 10104 Album.
Lewis graduated from Eastwood High School and UTEP. That’s where she got a Bachelor’s in Education. Then in 1974, she started working for YISD until retiring in 2010. Lewis also served as the Student Council advisor for 26 years and Student Activities Director for 17 years. In that time Lewis made her mark designing the cirriculum for the Student Leadership program that’s still in place today.
Even though family and friends are saying goodbye, they say Lewis isn’t done teaching yet. That’s because she donated her body to the Texas Tech Medical School so she can keep helping students learn. Her family is also asking that instead of flowers, people donate to the Deby Lewis Scholarship fund.
