Lee Trevino relives El Paso memories during visit
and that means a lot of old stories and laughs as “the merry mex” he court at el paso country club. abc-7’s darren hunt was there and has the story live in our newsroom. rick and estela, i had never met trevino so i was anxious to hear him talk about his time here in el paso … and he did not disappoint, taking questions about everything from his relationship with don haskins to his old home in santa teresa. “i miss it, i missed el paso .. ” lee trevino turns 76 next month. he moved to el paso in 1966. he won six majors, and four more on the senior tour. “the great thing about the city of el paso is it’s like family.” trevino spoke about his relationship with the late/great don haskins. “what i didn’t know about coach haskins was that he was actually a better pool player than he was a basketball coach … so the hustler got hustled.” i als asked him about this bathroom in his old santa teresa home, which to this day remains wallpapered with pictures of him. “yeah that was a big mistak when i did that bathroom, because i’d have guests and they would stay in there for two hours, i didn’t know what the hell they were doing … they were looking at all the pictures, i said, man, are you ok in there? .” trevino spent a lot of tim with the 41st all-america classic field. “when i was 3, 4, 5, i actually watched a whole bunch of lee trevino short game videos, that’s how i kind of got into the game a little bit, so for me it’s pretty cool.” and he spoke about playing golf with 5 different presidents. “president bush would putt ou and he’d go to the next tee … i’d have an eight footer and i’d hear swwish! … he’d already hit on the next tee so i’d just pick my ball up and i’d walk over there and he’d say did you make it, i’d say yep, another birdie … hell i think i shot 56 that day … you imagine a kid coming out of a cotton farm in texas played with five presidents, only in america you can do that, you can’t do that anyplace else, its been a wonderful run, a wonderful run.” trevino reminded me a lot ofhe called the all-america classic future” of golf. he urged everyone to catch a round this weekend at el paso country club. rick.
