Mother of toddler shot in eye with BB gun has been charged

Yessika Ordunez, the woman whose young son was shot in the eye with a BB gun in September, has been indicted by a Las Cruces grand jury.

She has been indicted on a charge of negligent child abuse resulting in great bodily injury, according to Las Cruces Police.

The charge is a first-degree felony count.

Police say 21-year-old Ordunez let her 16-month-old son to be in the custody of her boyfriend, 30-year-old Lorenzo Ordaz, who had allegedly been drinking alcohol and firing a BB gun near their mobile home.

Ordaz is not the father of the child.

Las Cruces Police were sent to the couple’s home at around 10 p.m. Sept. 30 after neighbors heard the young child crying and witnessed Ordaz holding the toddler near the mobile home park’s roadway.

Officers arrived to find the young boy bleeding from his right eye. Police say Ordaz fled the area before police arrived but was found and arrested two days later.

He remains incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Detention Center. He is charged with one count of negligent child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. The charge is a first-degree felony count.

Detectives received conflicting statements on how the boy was injured but police believe Ordaz was firing a C02-powered 4.5mm BB gun in the side yard while in the company of Ordunez’s child.

The young child was airlifted to El Paso Children’s Hospital. Medical professionals have since told detectives that the child has lost use of his right eye.

The young boy has been in the custody of his paternal grandparents since October.
