Western Refining looks to generate its own electricity, whic

biggest customers may start generating its own electricity – which could impact your electrical bill! today, abc 7 reporter evan folan spoke with both parties to better understand how it could affect other ratepayers here in the borderland. it’s a story you’ll see only on abc- seven … pkg “the company would never want t lose any customer, particularly it’s biggest customer.” wester refining uses enough electriciy every year to power close to 20- thousand homes. “we pay approximatley two million dollars a month for our electricity cost. and probably about 400 thousand of that is over our cost and subsidized the other rate classes.” standup: the new proposed rate increase is adding to that subsidy. encouraging the company to make future plans that include less expenses. one plan includes creating their own electricity! “co-generation is something tha we have been looking at for quiet a while – and even now with the proposed rate increase it is even more viable for use.” el paso electric wouldn’t be completely out of the picture. “probably about 80 percent of our electricity would be provided inside the refinery through our generation facilities.” 20 percent would b provided by el paso electric. ” i don’ see it having a real impact on any of the customers moving forward – it may have some impact as we look at equalizing things beyond when they may not be taking the full load from the grid.” which coul result in higher rates for other customers in the future. edf abc 7 customers in the future. edf abc 7 western refining has already budgeted the money for 2016 to engineer and design the project. if it decides to move forward, it could take two to three years to build the plant. we’re learning more about those involved
