el paso children’s hospital could be out of bankruptcy status as soon as january 8th. it all depends on the judge who has been overseeing children’s bankruptcy case the hearing is expected today at 11 this morning at the el paso federal courthouse. after children’s filed for bankruptcy– umc stepped in with a plan of its own to keep the hospital open. if the judge accepts that plan today– we could see the first step in possibly the most crucial decision to keep children’s up and running. next? umc would choose four of the seven board members for children’s. umc has been providing services to children’s for more than a year. u-m-c maintains it is owed more than 100-million dollars. abc-7 will be in the courtroom at eleven this morning. stay with abc-7 on-air and online. the funeral arrangements for centennial assistant coach roger grays are set. grays died from injuries he suffered in a car wreck on thanksgiving day on i-25 in las cruces. grays leaves behind a wife, 2 children and 5 stepchildren. visitation will take place today at la paz-graham’s funeral home on amador from 5-30 to 8-30. a funeral mass will be tomorrow at 10 a-m at las cruces first assembly of god. grays served in the u.s. army for 10 years and will be buried at fort bliss national cemetery at one p-m. he was a utep graduate with a bachelor of science degree. now to an abc-7 update on a weekend crash. the man accused of causing the sunday morning crash that killed his passenger — has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter. it happened on the 89- hundred block of dyer in the northeast. investigators say 23-year-old jesus mireles was drunk and speeding when he crashed into two food trucks in a private parking lot. a search of court records shows mireles had been cited for speeding three times between october 2011 and march 2012. mireles’ passenger — 25- year-old daniel nicolas mendoza — died from his injuries. court documents obtained by the abc-7 i-team state that before the crash — mendoza called 911 — saying mireles would not let him out of the vehicle and that he was running red lights. mendoza had stated that mireles was his boyfriend. documents state mireles admitted to drinking the night of the crash. we are now hearing from neighbors who helped residents evacuate after an apartment fire in north central el paso . we first brought this as breaking news on good morning el paso yesterday. it happened on the 46-hundred block of alabama at the los alcos apartments just after 5 a.m. take a look at this video sent to us by an abc-7 viewer monica scarborough. the flames are shooting from the roof and window of the apartment. thankfully no residents or firefighters were hurt. firefighters were able to contain the fire to that one unit. we spoke with a neighbor who helped people get out: “we made sure that everyone was out of the apartment.. firefighters, they moved really quick.” firefighters say at least 13 residents were evacuated. they’re getting help from the red cross. the cause is still under investigation. now to another abc-7 update about a deadly shooting at a retirement home over the weekend. police say 91-year- old nelson harvey shot his wife — 93 year old evelyn harvey — in the back of the head. harvey is charged with murder. it happened sunday at the monte vista at coronado retirement home on the 15-hundred block of belvidere. according to an affidavit obtained by the abc-7 i-team, caretakers initially thought harvey’s wife had died of natural causes, but when they asked him, they say he admitted to shooting his wife. caretakers then asked harvey if he had a handgun, he said yes, and handed over the weapon. while in custody, harvey told police that he shot his wife of more than 60 years because he was tired of her suffering. officials say evelyn was terminally ill. the man found dead in northeast el paso over the weekend–was an el paso community college professor. 41-year-old william john wolff was found dead on saturday on the 4- thousand block of skyline. wolff’s body was found outside his brother’s law office. police say he died from gunshot wounds. no other details are being released at this time. in a statement to abc-7 — epcc said wolff taught government at the valle verde campus. no arrests have been made. if you have information about this case.. call crime stoppers of el paso at 566- 84-77. that’s 5-6-tips. the el paso county sheriff’s office is investigating a suspicious death off i-10 near the fabens exit. an abc-7 camera was rolling as investigators set up a perimeter around the body earlier this morning. we called a sheriff’s office spokeswoman earlier this afternoon. she did not have any information for us. now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… we have much more to come here on good morning el paso— russia is has given france a unique and russia is has given france a unique and thoughtful gift after the raids in northern paris last month—details coming up. / plus—heavy rains turned streets into creeks in one part of the country–we’ll take a look at the damage coming up. meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
