Update: Driver now charged with murder in wreck that killed boyfriend
Dec. 8, 2015 Update: A man who was originally charged with intoxication manslaughter has now been charged with murder.
Jesus Alberto Mireles, 23, is currently in the hospital for injuries sustained in a crash that killed his boyfriend and passenger in his car, Daniel Nicholas Mendoza.
Police say the charge was changed to murder because of information discovered in the investigation, including that, “acts by Mireles which were clearly dangerous to human life and led to the death of Daniel Nicolas Mendoza.”
Dec. 7, 2015 Story: A passenger who called 911 to say he wanted to get out of a vehicle traveling at 100 mph was killed after a wreck Sunday morning.
Daniel Nicolas Mendoza, 25, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver, 23-year-old Jesus Alberto Mireles, has been arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge.
A criminal complaint obtained by ABC-7 says a man called emergency dispatchers shortly after 5:30 a.m. to say he was in a car traveling about 100 mph down Hondo Pass, Diana, and Dyer.
According to the complaint, the man said he “wanted to get out of the vehicle but ‘Jesus’ wouldn’t let him.”
The man told dispatchers the driver kept running red lights and speeding, according to the document. The caller told the dispatcher the driver was his boyfriend.
Eleven minutes later, the report of the crash came in.
The vehicle had crashed into two food trucks and a van.
According to police, Mireles admitted to paramedics that he had been drinking alcohol, and they detected alcohol on his breath.
Mireles was taken to the hospital where he remained as of Monday. A police spokesman said Mireles will be booked into jail upon his release.
A search of court records shows Mireles had been cited for speeding three times between October 2011 and March 2012. Two cases were dismissed, one was disposed of.
Dec. 6, 2015 Original Story: An early morning accident in Northeast El Paso sent two men to University Medical Center in serious to critical condition. Witnesses at the scene tell ABC-7 the driver was on Dyer at Moonlight when he lost control of his vehicle and drove into a parking lot, hitting three food trucks that were parked there. El Paso police officers are still trying to determine how and why the driver lost control. Earlier, North and South bound roads was closed along the 8900 block of Dyer.
