major of the army – its highest ranking enlisted soldier – says it’s their biggest problem. is fort bliss doing anything to fix the problem? abc-7’s evan folan has a story you’ll see only on abc-7. evan? r/e i’m told the commanding general at fort bliss says his main focus is “readiness.” and the post doing all it can to decrease the number of non- deployable soldiers. “not everyone loves deployments it’s just something that we do whether or not we want to or not.” the sergeant major of the army daniel dailey says 50,000 soldiers are non-deployable. “generally speaking non deployable means that a soldier has some physical limitation or injury that would prohibit them from serving in a combat zone.” in an article on army.mil dailey says non-deployable soldiers are the army’s biggest problem adding quote: “”if you will not or canno fight and win, then there’s no place for you in the army,” fort bliss is trying to manage that problem “the commanding general at fort bliss number one priority is readiness and here at fort bliss we have a number of programs to maximize the number of soldiers to deploy.” childs says they do this through leader involvment, medical and physical traing facilities, and ready and resilient programs to ensure soldiers are ready for deployment. “the aim is to get soldiers ready and able to deploy – those that are not able to deploy are place in jobs were they can work and contribute to the team” the sergeant major of the army thinks incentivizing deployments would decrease the number of non-deployables. suggesting more promotion opportunities and an increase in deployment pay. but one soldier i spoke with disagrees “i don’t think it is about th pay to most people, i think it is more about their service to their country.” several other soldiers i spoke with said those who are non-deployable still contribute to the army’s overall goal to fight and win – whether they are deployed or not. up ahead — a sneak peak at a story abc- 7’s darren
