Family of late cartoonist Thomas Moore holds estate sale
This past summer, El Paso lost a local artist known throughout the nation.
Thomas Moore was a contributing cartoonist and writer for Archie comics.
Friday afternoon, family members began a weekend-long estate sale at his home.
Moore was known for his work on the Archie comic book series since the 1950s
and at his estate sale people were finding some gems from the past.
“Well he wasn’t only a cartoonist, he was a collector,” said Tom Moore, a cousin of Thomas.
Moore who is helping the family sell off many of the cartoonist’s belongings.
Everything from place mats and old typewriters to jackets are up for grabs, but there is something special about this estate sale.
“We’ve had a lot of people that specialize in comics come in,” said Moore.
The illustrator who created an iconic cartoon left behind stacks and stacks and more stacks of comics.
Some are worth a $1 and some are worth $400.
Also a steal: reprints of Archie comic strips for a $1.
“It’s very surprising and cool,” said Brandon Cordero, who dropped in on a whim.
“It was really cool to see the history,” he added.
Family members tell ABC-7 Moore’s office has interesting pieces, including an El Paso Herald Post comic strip from 1933 and a chair he could have used to sketch his art work. If you look closely you can find a collector’s book or two.
“He …read a lot of books on the history of El Paso, about the history of comics. He was just a well-rounded renaissance man,” said Moore.
Friday was the first day of the sale. The estate sale will continue Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday is their bargain day from 10 a.m -5 p.m. at 3224 Old Spanish Trail.
