Update: Armed Robbery Teens
a high speed chase in new mexico… could be back in the sun city to face the music before too long. we get that new information tonight from abc-seven’s andrew j. polk. rick and estela, the el paso police department has finished it’s investigation into the crimes the teens are accused of back in mid october… and have handed it over to the el paso county attorney’s office to determine what charges they’ll face. all the teens are still dealing with the new mexico charges right now. 15 year old edwin rodriguez pleaded no contest to charges including aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon. 14 year old jaquil webb pleaded guilty to other charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. and the three other teens all face charges related to the chase that ended in otero county. they are: 15 year old evelyn brown, 14 year old antonio brown, and 14 year old isaiah garcia. rodriguez is scheduled for sentencing in alamgordo tomorrow. but once the teens are done and sentenced in new mexico, they will most likely be brought back to texas to deal with charges in an el paso juvenile court. they’ll be charged with crimes in connection to the 4 northeast and eastside businesses police say they robbed armed with pellet guns. after that, police say the teens led them on a high speed chase into otero county in new mexico. this video from our new mexico mobile newsroom near the the state line shows investigators searching for money and weapons the teens allegedly threw out of the s- u-v’s windows. and abc-7 was there as otero county sherriff’s deputies and other agencies brought their car to a halt just south of alamogordo. warrants have already been filed to bring the teens back to el paso… as soon new mexico is through with them. they’ll face charges still to be determined. “anything really that involve violence against another individual. so, robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated assaults, whether it’s serious bodily injury or by deadly weapon, murder. anything really of a felony offense that is violent in nature.” one big difference in how they’ll be dealt with in texas? how the system is set up. texas’ juvenile justice is focused on rehabilitation – and release. meaning that unless there is no chance these teens can be refored, that will be the focus… and the prosecution would have to specifically argue and prove that the teens are a danger to themselves and the community to be kept in confinement. rick and estela? abc-seven is still waiting for investigators to say
