Update: Man arrested in El Paso homicide previously served time for urinating on Alamo
Dec. 22 Update: El Paso Police have released the name of the man shot to death on Sunday.
Hector Jimenez, 56, of the 200 block of Friar Tuck, was shot at the 4800 block of Alameda on Sunday. He was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Daniel Michael Athens, originally wanted for questioning in the shooting death, was arrested Monday afternoon after a standoff in Northeast El Paso.
El Paso Police Department SWAT team and the U.S Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested Athens at 6100 Deer on a warrant for murder.
Citizens called police and reported seeing Athens in the area of the 6100 block of Deer on Monday afternoon.
Officers from the various agencies were able to locate Athens hiding in a storage shed behind a trailer home on that street.
Police say Athens refused to come out of the shed and threatened to hurt himself with a knife.
El Paso Police SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene. After an hour of negotiating with Athens to come out, SWAT Team members were able to deploy an Air Taser and take Athens into custody.
Athens was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a murder charge with a $1 million bond. Athens also had additional warrants of Aggravated Kidnapping ($50,000 bond), Criminal Attempt Murder ($150,000 bond), Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon ($50,000 bond).
Athens was arrested in April 2012 after he was found urinating on a front wall of the Alamo in San Antonio.
In April 2014, a judge ordered Athens to spend 18 months in a state jail facility for urinating on the Alamo.
Athens had pleaded guilty to felony criminal mischief in February 2014 in exchange for a deal that capped his possible punishment at 18 months. The crime usually is punishable by up to two years of incarceration.
The San Antonio Express-News reported in April 2014 that Athens was also ordered to pay $4,000 in restitution – the cost of repairing the damage done to the facade of the 251-year-old building.
Dec. 21 Evening Update: An overnight manhunt ended in a standoff inside a Northeast mobile home park.
El Paso Police say 25-year-old Daniel Michael Athens was arrested around 3:45 p.m. Monday.
A mobile home owner called police after hearing noises coming from inside his shed.
When police arrived they found Athens barricaded inside the shed.
Police were assisted by U.S. Deputy Marshals during the almost hour-long standoff.
Police say Athens was tazed before being arrested.
EMS checked on Athens and then he was taken to police headquarters in a police car to be booked.
Police say Athens is allegedly the suspect in Sunday night’s shooting that left a 56-year-old man dead.
The man’s identity has not been revealed.
Dec. 21 Afternoon Update: An El Paso Police officer on the scene told ABC-7 that Daniel Michael Athens is in custody.
Athens is wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred over the weekend.
ABC-7 was at the corner of Cross and Sun Valley Monday afternoon in the general area of where El Paso Police and US Marshals have been looking for Daniel Michael Athens.
Border Patrol agents moved to another, nearby mobile home park in the area.
ABC-7 saw about 10 Border Patrol agents that moved closer to a home, asking a man to “drop the knife, drop the knife, drop the knife.”
Dec. 21 Morning Update: El Paso Police and the US Marshals service are searching for the person allegedly involved in homicide.
A police sergeant in the 6100 block of Sun Valley, where a search was being conducted Monday morning, told ABC-7 that a weapon had been found but would not say what kind of weapon.
Police also were told that Daniel Michael Athens, wanted for questioning in the homicide, had been seen in the area. Police on Monday were now calling Athens a suspect in the case instead of person of interest, as they had referred to him before.
A law enforcement helicopter is being used to help in the search of the area, as well.
Original Story: Detectives with the El Paso Police Department are looking for a man wanted for questioning in a shooting that left one man dead.
Police are searching for Daniel Michael Athens, 25, for questioning in what they are now calling a homicide investigation.
On Sunday night, El Paso police responded to a a subject down on the 4800 block of Alameda. A spokesman for the police department says they discovered an unresponsive man about 56 years of age with gun shot wounds.
The man was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He has not been identified yet.
Police investigated locations around the city on Sunday night.
The spokesman said a location near Sun Valley Drive was being investigated in relation to the shooting but did not release any other details.
Residents at the Queen’s Mobile Home, on Sun Valley Drive, were not allowed to reenter the area until after midnight.
Police were also at the scene near Mesquite Bush Drive for the investigation.
