Single-vehicle rollover sends AWOL soldier to hospital

A routine traffic stop turned into a single-vehicle rollover in Tornillo.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a trooper attempted to stop a speeding vehicle, however for unknown reasons the driver did not pull over.

The driver, 19-year-old Nicholas Martarano, veered off the road and rolled multiple times near mile marker 54. Martarano was ejected from the vehicle and transported to Del Sol Medical Center.

DOS says Martarano was AWOL from the Army out of Fort Gordon, Georgia. He also had a warrant from the U.S. Army for being AWOL.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, and the driver will be charged with a DWI.

Martarano was last reported in stable condition at Del Sol Medical Center.
