Man arrested after allegedly stealing ATVs
Doa Ana County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Las Cruces man who they allege is responsible for a string of burglaries that were reported in the past several weeks to the sheriff’s office, the Mesilla Marshal’s office, and the Las Cruces Police Department.
Christopher Reed, 21, was taken into custody Tuesday on eight counts of receiving or transferring stolen property and one count of criminal damage to property.
The investigation began in December, 2015 when a burglary victim alerted sheriff’s deputies to the 100 block of Aries, where the victim told deputies he could see his stolen ATV parked on the property as he was driving by.
After further investigation, deputies discovered two other ATVs, two fifty-gallon drums of diesel fuel, copper fittings and a variety of other items that had allegedly been reported stolen over the past several weeks.
The homeowners on Aries cooperated with the investigation and told detectives Reed had allegedly been storing the items there for some time. Reed was transported to the Doa Ana County Detention Center where he was being held on an $8,000 secured bond.
Most of the property recovered during the investigation has been returned to the rightful owners. A samurai sword is among a few items left. If anyone reported one stolen in the past several weeks and can identify it, you are asked to call the Doa Ana County Sheriff’s Department to recover it, (575) 525-1911.
