District Attorney Jaime Esparza fought to avoid runoff all night

The District Attorney race could go into a runoff.

Jaime Esparza entered Tuesday’s election with a more than 20 percent advantage in the race for the 34th Judicial District.

Esparza needed 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff.

Challenger Yvonne Rosales has garnered 28.82 percent of the vote, while Leonard Morales got 21.43 percent. That puts Esparza just below the threshold to avoid a runoff.

The 34th Judicial District stretches into Hudspeth and Culberson counties. Results for Culberson County have not been made available.
