is going on this week for students throughout the borderland. but are some students penalized in their college search, because different districts assign credit differently? abc-7’s andrew j polk has more. :19 :33 1:22 with ap testing underway, some students have questions and complaints. do some students get more credit for the same achievement? student sots standup “distric officials say that there is a benefit to every student that takes advanced courses like a-p classes, regardless of their grade level, but they do add that there is a difference between seniors and all underclassmen due to a change that was started four years ago.” “that committee also decided that we should grandfather some of those students in at the time, and phase it in. so this year’s senior class under the old system.” episd has a split system, with seniors this year being the last class to get points added to their classroom grade in these more challenging classes … others have their a-p classes weighted with extra credit added to the 4-point gpa scale. in canutillo, points are added to the final grade based on how well they did in the class and on ap tests… except for seniors at the end of the school year, since test results come back too late, and grades need to be finalized for transcripts. in the gasden i-s-d, students get both – ap classes are weighted and points are given. for both clint i-s-d and the las cruces public school system, class g-p-a’s are weighted. in the socorro independent school district, it’s similar. “we do provid weighted points for those students who are completing these courses with a passing grade.” so with all these weights and points, what does that mean for students trying to get into college? “i’ve never heard of a colleg that says ‘i’m going to take number one at school district a versus one at school district b.'” overall e-p-i-s-d says performance is important, but that colleges look at the whole student package, not just grades. andrew j. polk, abc-7. the good news is that colleges know a-p credit isn’t always equal, and apply their own formulas for admissions and scholarships. the advice of some experts is … just do your best, and don’t worry about anyone else. the demand for testing mosquitoes
