EPPD: 2 women killed in Monday’s fiery I-10 crash, truck driver failed to control speed

Two women died after the driver of a semi truck rear-ended the car they were riding in, El Paso Police said Tuesday.

The victims have not been identified.

The crashed happened at about 6:15 p.m. Monday, according to fire department officials.

Tuesday, police said the driver of the semi truck, 27-year-old Fateh Singh of Fresno, California, failed to reduce his speed when traffic slowed down, crashing into the car in front of him.

Firefighters arrived to find the semi-truck and the car underneath it engulfed in flames, officials with the fire department said. 15 fire trucks and 36 firefighters were called to the scene. It took crews about an hour to extinguish the fire.

Police shut down the freeway at I-10 East and Sunland Park in West El Paso around 6 p.m. Monday evening. The eastbound lanes were not reopened until about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, nearly 19 hours after the crash.

The closure remained in effect hours after the investigation wrapped up because the cargo inside the semi truck was still smoldering.

Six other vehicles were involved in the crash: a Toyota Prius, two Nissan Altimas, Chevrolet Camaro, and a Chevrolet Silverado.

Six people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, two were treated on the highway withnon-life threatening injuries.
