Palafox beats Ramirez in race for 8th Court of Appeals seat

Attorney Gina M. Palafox defeated Maria Ramirez, a municipal court judge, in the race for Justice for the 8th Court of Appeals.

Palafox maintained a strong lead over Ramirez as election day numbers were tallied. With 98 percent of the votes counted, Palafox garnered 59 percent of the ballots with 9,316 votes compared to Ramirez’s 6,398.

The court is based in El Paso and is composed of a Chief Justice and two justices. It has appellate jurisdiction of both civil and criminal cases appealed from district and county courts in 17 West Texas Counties.

Incumbent Steven Hughes did not make it to the runoff election. There is no Republican opponent in the November general election.
