overnight—the el paso county sheriff’s office is investigating a deadly assault. / plus— today is the first day of school for some kids in the borderland. what parents, teachers can expect in a live report this morning. / and police in austin say they now have a person of interest in a deadly shooting over the weekend that left one woman dead. today marks 10- years since the borderland was hit by these devestating floods. august 1, 2006—was the day el paso was hit with record rainfall. many areas, under water. homes damaged. and families all over town had to relocate. and here’s a live look at the borderland from our abc-7 studio this morning. the chance for rain is back in the forecast this week. we’ll have details in a bit—but first — a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. / monsoon type weather is back to the borderland. showers and thunderstorms will increase in the area during the week. localized heavy rain and flooding could occur areas west of the rio grande as the moisture plume establishes in western new mexico. temperatures will decrease to near normal values with partly to mostly cloudy skies. to breaking news … sheriff’s deputies are investigating a homicide. it started as an assault around 11:30 last night in ascarate park. this is new video from our ’round the clock crew at the scene. all we know — is emergency dispatchers tell us the man who was assaulted was taken to u-m-c with serious injuries. and that deputies say he was pronounced dead at the hospital. we’ll bring you more information as we get it. new this morning — students in el paso and new mexico are gearing up for the first day of school today. good morning el paso’s andrew j. polk is live in far east el paso with details. andrew? good morning hillary and stephanie. i’m at the john durgan school where students will be making there way a little later this morning. the socorro independent school district will welcome more than 45,300 students back to the classroom in 47 campuses today. along with the students, some new and returning programs will also be in place for s-i-s- d. free half-day universal pre-kindergarten – all four-year-old students in team sisd are eligible for free half-day pre- kindergarten regardless of state requirements for free pre-k. in addition to offering free full-day pre-k on a first-come, first-served basis to those who qualify and a tuition-based half-day program to those who do not qualify dual credit opportunities at every high school – potentially saved nearly $6 million in college tuition by completing dual credit courses. career and technical education – team sisd’s cte students earn some 6,000 industry- recognized certifications win academy – which is designed to help students who need more assistance than what is offered in a traditional school setting, has expanded to 16 campuses this school year. rams early college high school at montwood high school – this school within a school is the district’s third early college program, which will open this year. it offers students an opportunity to earn an associate’s degree in science or 60 college credit hours and a high school diploma in a comprehensive high school environment. sparta business academy at pebble hills high school – the district’s newest advanced academic academy will offer students a four-year program in business and finance with an opportunity to earn an associate’s degree in collaboration with el paso community college, internships and other real- world experiences. operation college bound and operation future ready – ensures more activities and awareness is provided to create a college-bound culture at every campus in the district. state-of-the-art facilities – all projects in sisd’s bond 2011 program have been completed on- time and under budget. the hard work and efficient management of sisd facilities and planning team, saved $37.4 million in bond 2011, which allowed for the upgrade of air conditioning and other improvements at four middle schools – capt. walter e. clarke, socorro, salvador h. sanchez, and william d. slider – which were completed for this school year. team sisd remained true to the bond motto of “promises made, promises kept.” adult education – the district’s community education department empowers adult students with esl, citizenship, ged, literacy and vocational certification courses for opportunities to advance their learning and improve their futures. currently, adult esl students are being accepted for free workforce certification courses to earn credentials as a security officer, computer technician, hvac technician, general office specialist, or building maintenance specialist. and joing us now live to talk about some of this is coming up a little later.. reporting live, andrew j. polk, abc-7. happening today— public universities across texas are now allowing concealed handgun holders on campus with their concealed weapons… and that includes utep. the campus-carry law — will make texas one of a handful of states that guarantee the right to carry concealed handguns on campus. utep officials talk with abc-seven about the affect of the law on the campus atmosphere. that’s coming up during our second half hour of gmep. new information this morning– authorities in austin have released this photo of a man who they say is a person of interest in a deadly shooting over the weekend. police say they want to question 24- year-old endicott mccray. the shooting happened early sunday morning in the sixth street entertainment district. one woman was killed and another 4 were injured. as the investigation continues—co- workers and friends gathered last night to pay their respects to the woman killed. 30- year-old tanika moultrie was a school bus driver in california. she was in austin over the weekend to visit her fiancee’s family. / the backlash continues this morning for the g- o-p presidential candidate and comments made about him during the democratic national convention last week … “”you have sacrificed nothin and no one….cheers” a father, making an emotional, heartbreaking speech calling out the republican nominee. trump, along with the speaker of the house, paul ryan, are both speaking out this morning. we’ll have more about what the g-o-p nominee is saying and what paul ryan said about muslim americans who serve in the u.s. military, that’s coming up in just a bit on gmep. two motorcyclists have died following two separate crashes this weekend. one happened yesterday morning on the 18-hundred block of paisano near the spur 19-66.. police say the driver of a truck failed to yield to a motorcyclist. the rider of the bike, 29- year old paul yuen, crashed into the truck. he was taken to u-m-c where he died. / in the lower valley on saturday, another motorcyclist died after police say a car failed to yield to the rider also. this happened on the 12- hundred block of lomaland. the victim was identified as 59- year-old juan sandoval. no word on whether the drivers in each of these crashes will be facing any chrages.. 6-07… weather and traffic on the 7s… monsoon type weather is back to the borderland. showers and now it’s time to take a look at the tx-dot traffic cams… we still have much more to come here on gmep— heavy downpours and severe
