Judge adds 8 years to maximum sentence for man found guilty of stabbing
A man found guilty of stabbing another in Anthony, New Mexico in 2015 has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, said officials with the Doa Ana District Attorney’s Office.
On Monday, Roberto Urquidi, 35, was sentenced to the maximum three years in prison by Chief District Judge Fernando Macias. An additional eight years was added to the sentence for Urquidi being a habitual offender.
The stabbing happened near a church on the 200 block of Lincoln St. in Anthony, New Mexico in February 2015.
The District Attorney’s Office said that during trial, prosecutors proved that Urquidi, who was serving a federal prison sentence in Arkansas, threatened to kill a 50-year-old man because he was dating Urquidi’s girlfriend. They said after being released from prison, Urquidi found the man and stabbed him twice.
A trauma surgeon testified during the trial that the victim suffered serious injuries to his heart, lung, and diaphragm. The victim’s spleen and adrenal gland had to be removed.
Under New Mexico law, a defendant’s sentence may be enhanced by eight years if he’s been previously convicted of three felonies.
Urquidi in this case had previously been convicted of assaulting a family member, unauthorized use of a vehicle and theft of property. Those incidents took place between March 2003 and July 2007.
