Man taken into custody after SWAT standoff in Lower Valley

A man who barricaded himself inside a home with two children inside surrendered after a SWAT standoff Monday in the Lower Valley.

Officers responded to a family fight about 7 p.m. on the 700 block of Pendale Road. An unidentified 34-year-old man allegedly tried to strangle a woman who was able to get away and meet with officers.

The man became confrontational with the officers and barricaded himself inside the home, police said. There were two children inside.

SWAT, Crisis Management and Bomb Squad officers responded. About 10:30 p.m., the man surrendered and was taking in to custody.

He was expected to be treated and evaluated before being booked into the El Paso County Jail on a charge of assault on a family or household member by impeding breath or circulation.
