New Mexico AG rules on complaint against DAC Commissioners filed by the Sheriff

Score one for two Doa Ana County commissioners whom the sheriff accused of violating New Mexico’s Open Meetings Act.

The New Mexico attorney genera l ruled Commissioner Chair Billy Garrett and Vice Chair Wayne Hancock were in substantial compliance and committed no wrongdoing.

In May of 2015, ABC-7 obtained a copy of the complaint Sheriff Kiki Vigil filed with the attorney general’s office.

In the complaint, Vigil claimed Garrett and Hancock deliberately violated New Mexico’s Open Meetings Act by illegally going behind closed doors for a budget discussion that affected his department.

Both commissioners denied the allegations and the state’s AG determined determined they did nothing wrong.

Garrett told the ABC-7 New Mexico Mobile Newsroom on Wednesday the county commission always works to abide by the rules of the Open Meetings Act.
