UTEP men’s basketball opens regular season with win over Louisiana College
EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP men’s basketball team struggled in two preseason exhibitions, but had little trouble with Louisiana College in the season opener, as the Miners cruised to a 88-54 win at the Don Haskins Center.
Omega Harris led the Miners in scoring, tallying 24 points and connecting on four of six three-point attempts.
Louisiana College jumped out to an early 22-21 lead, but the Miners rallied from that point, taking a 16-point lead into halftime.
In the second half, UTEP continued to pour it on en route to the 34-point win.
Terry Winn added 15 points and eight boards on the night in just 24 minutes of action.
One possible point of concern? Turnovers. The Miners committed 22 turnovers in the win.
Things get much tougher for UTEP next week in the Gildan Charleston Classic tournament. UTEP opens tourney play against Wake Forest on Thursday.
The Miners may end up meeting defending NCAA champion Villanova in the second round if UTEP and Nova both win or if both teams lose their first round matchups.
