Providence’s Transmountain Campus begins taking in patients

El Paso’s newest teaching hospital, The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus opened its doors to the public Tuesday.

“When we say we’re a full service community hospital we mean if your family is delivering a baby, has an emergency, we’re your hospital,” said Nicholas Tejeda, the hospital’s chief executive officer.

The hospital has a partnership with Texas Tech to operate as a teaching hospital and is in the process of recruiting 50 new physicians to practice and teach alongside medical students and residents.

“We’re training the next generation of physicians, of nurses,” said Tejeda. “Not just for El Paso, not just for our region, but for the entire united states. We have to hold ourselves to the highest standards.”

Having a student attend to your medical needs may seem frightening, but Tejeda said teaching hospitals are safer than regular hospitals.

“If you look at the resources of a teaching hospital, not only do you have a resident who is an M.D., who has already gone through the medical training…you have a physician who has already been practicing for years,” said Tejeda

In addition to the state-of-the-art equipment, and 106 rooms in the 6-story campus, the hospital will bring an economic boost to the area.

Director of Business Development Stephen Chandler said the construction of the hospital employed around 400 workers. They have already hired two-thirds of employees for the new campus.

“We have around 200 jobs already that have been created at the hospital,” said Chandler.

That number is set to grow to 300 by the end of 2017 with more jobs opening as the hospital grows.

“There have been a lot of studies that indicate for one hospital job it creates 2.3 Jobs in the economy,” said Chandler.
