El Paso to host 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game
The Chihuahuas announced Thursday afternoon that the 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game will be played at Southwest University Park in July of that year, although an exact date has not been determined.
The All-Star celebration will also include a banquet and home run derby, among other events.
El Paso reportedly beat out other cities including Fresno for the right to host the 2019 game.
“The word has gone out about El Paso,” said Branch Rickey, president of the Pacific Coast League. “The word has gone out about Southwest University Park. The word has gone out about the fans here. The word has gone out about what a special experience this is.”
Previous Triple-A All-Star games have featured talent such as Derek Jeter, Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza, Chipper Jones, and dozens more future MLB stars.
Mayor Oscar Leeser even made an appearance at the news conference and said that this is something El Pasoans should be proud is coming to their city.
“The congratulations really goes to the City of El Paso, that we have the opportunity to shine again and be in the spotlight and continue to show the rest of the country why El Paso is who it is today,” he said.
The Chihuahuas have sent a total of five players to the Triple-A All-Star Game in their three-year history.
Last season alone the Chihuahuas sent three players – Hunter Renfroe, Carlos Asuaje, and Casey McElroy. In 2015 the Chihuahuas sent fan-favorite Cody Decker, while Jonathan Galvez was the team’s first all-star back in 2014.
