UPDATE: Fugitive officer shot has died

A police officer shot and killed a wanted man who slashed an officer Tuesday in Las Cruces, a police spokesman said.

Jeremy Lopez-Robledo, 29, was on New Mexico’s most-wanted list. He was described as a violent offender and gang member. Lopez-Robledo violated his probation by allegedly failing to report to the New Mexico Department of Corrections.

Lopez-Robledo was a purported member the SUR 13 gang in Las Cruces. The Marshals Service said he had a lengthy criminal record that includes charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; robbery; battery upon a health care worker; residential burglary; unlawful taking of a motor vehicle; battery upon a peace officer; and assault on a peace officer.

Lopez-Robledo died from his injuries Tuesday afternoon.

The officers were assisting a U.S. Marshals Service Task Force when they spotted Lopez-Robledo in the shopping center at Missouri Avenue and Solano Drive in South Las Cruces. He allegedly led a brief foot chase that ended in front of the Lowe’s grocery store.

Lopez-Robledo allegedly pulled out a knife, and after a struggle slashed one of the officers, police said. At least one officer opened fire, LCPD spokesman Dan Trujillo said.

Lopez-Robledo was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured officer is also being treated at a hospital, but is expected to be OK.

Several police units blocked off the area Tuesday morning. Several ambulances were on the scene. Police said none of the nearby schools had to be placed on lock down.

The LCPD officer has been placed on temporary administrative leave which is standard protocol for such an incident.

The shooting is being investigated by the Officer-involved Incident Task Force which includes detectives from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police.
