Council approves $109-million improvement plan for EP International
El Paso City Council approved a five-year, $109-million improvement plan for the El Paso International Airport.
The plan is designed to promote sustainable economic growth, improve infrastructure and enhance the airport’s appeal, city officials said.
According to City Council meeting agenda, a bulk of the cost comes from runway construction, which could cost more than $35 million.
An overhaul of the passenger notification system will also be implemented, costing more than $ 2 million. The new technology will allow passengers to get flight, gate and baggage information.
Security, landscape and lighting improvements are also included in the plan, as are a consolidated baggage inspection system and children’s playground.
Monica Lombraña, director of aviation at El Paso International Airport said the improvements really help attract passenger and business.
“We meet not just with new airlines, but our existing airlines as well so that we can approach them with new nonstop destinations,” Lombraña said.
The construction may be a hindrance to travelers, but Lombraña said we have to remember the end result.
“It’s all for progress,” Lombraña said. “While constructions is going on it’s important to remember that jobs are created.”
