NMSU students forced to move out of dorms on three day notice

Dozens of students are being uprooted mid-semester to allow the for renovation and modifications to a first-year student dormitory.

Housing and Residential Life Director Matt Crouse says about 84 students are being moved to another part of the Garcia Hall.

“We were notified that we have to move out our stuff and we are going to be relocated,” sophomore Dominique Solis said. “It’s a little tedious. I want to get homework done today.”

First-year-student Malik Jefferson said he learned about his relocation Thursday night. “It makes me mad because of the really late notice. This is a two day notice at the latest.” Jefferson said.

Crouse understands the students frustration with the three day notice, but says the abrupt decision came immediately after New Mexico Higher Education Department approved their $500,000 renovation plan.

In order to stay on schedule and complete the project before next school year, construction must begin on March 1.

The project will continue through the summer months in anticipation for the incoming class.

“We really want to make certain that the experience is the best possibly experience for our future Agggie, so that it what we are working towards,” Crouse said.

Students affected by the project have been promised first priority next year for on-campus housing.
