NMSU students hold “Love Trumps Hate” rally on Valentine’s Day
Dozens rallied at New Mexico State University to show their opposition of President Donald Trump Tuesday.
The “Love Trumps Hate” rally brought together dozens of community members from different organizations.
People made signs that showed their support for immigrants, the LGBTQ community and those of different races.
The group then marched from the Corbett Center on NMSU’s campus to in front of President Garrey Carruther’s office building.
That’s where NMSU students and supporters read poetry and expressed their concerns within the community.
Some people held signs that read “make NMSU a sanctuary campus.”
In December, NMSU President Carruthers sent a memo to students, staff and faculty stating NMSU will not declare itself a sanctuary campus.
Carruthers said NMSU will not ban law enforcement from campus, saying doing so, would jeopardize federal funding.
His memo came after a petition circulated on campus calling for NMSU to declare itself a sanctuary campus.
