Water main break closes several downtown blocks

El Paso police have closed several streets due to a water main break in Downtown El Paso.

Water could be seen gushing out of a several manholes and storm drains near San Jacinto Plaza early Tuesday morning.

The ABC-7 ‘Round the Clock news crew learned from El Paso Water crews that Stanton Street and Mills Avenue are closed all the way to the Plaza Theatre, three blocks west from the intersection.

The intersection of Mesa and Main Streets will remain closed all day.

A security guard at the historic Cortez building tells ABC-7 the basement of the former hotel is now flooded with water. The building is home to several first floor restaurants which will not be opening today as water services have been shut off.

A spokesman for El Paso Water says the break was first reported just before 4 in the morning. The spokesman tells ABC-7 and 8 inch line burst somewhere underneath the intersection of Mesa and Mills. At this time crews are still trying to determine the exact location of the broken pipe. Crews are expected to remain on the scene all morning long.

El Paso Water says 23 customers were impacted in the morning, but water has since been restored.
