EPPD: Girl, 16, shot and killed while handling gun

El Paso Police say a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were handling a gun early Wednesday morning when the gun discharged, striking the 16-year-old in the upper torso.

The girl was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died.

Earlier Wednesday, Police said the shooting appeared to be a suicide.

The shooting happened at a home on the 400 block of Hardy at about 3:30 am.

Police said the 18-year-old man, identified as Victory Lago-Elama, was arrested because he had outstanding warrant related to a separate investigation. Lago-Elama’s mug shot has not been released by police.

The young man was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $200,000 bond.
