Suspect in Sunland Park shooting in custody, police say
Police told ABC-7 the suspect in Sunday’s shooting on the 100 block of Calle Madero is now in custody.
The shooting March 26, 2017 began as a feud between “taunting” neighbors, police said.
Police said at least three shots were fired and a man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Monday, police chief Javier Guerra told ABC-7 the alleged gunman is 37-year-old Juan Joytia. Joytia turned himself in to police shortly before 5pm Monday.
The original “aggravated battery with a deadly weapon” has been upgraded to “attempted murder,” police said.
Police said Joytia fired several rounds, striking the victim. Joytia’s gun jammed as he tried to shoot another bystander, police said..
The shooting may be gang related, police said.
