President Donald Trump proposing budget cuts to cover the down payment for a border wall

Tuesday evening White House documents were submitted to Congress.

The Trump administration is proposing $18 billion in budget cuts for a down payment on the southern border wall.

The proposal would eliminate $1.2 billion in the National Health Institutes research grants.

The goals National Health Institute are:

-To foster discoveries that will protect and improve health

-To develop, maintain, and renew resources that will ensure the nation’s capability to prevent disease

-To expand the knowledge base in medical sciences.

The proposal would also cut $1.5 billion in Community Development Block Grants.

-The program was enacted in 1974 by president Gerald Ford.

-It is one of the longest-running programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

-Funds may be used for community development like neighborhood centers, job creation and public services.

“The administration is asking the American taxpayer to cover the cost of a wall – unneeded, ineffective, absurdly expensive – that Mexico was supposed to pay for, and he is cutting programs vital to the middle class to get that done,” said Democratic Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer of New York.

Schumer feels there’s little options.

“Build the wall or repair or build a bridge or tunnel or road in your community? What’s the choice?”

Some Republicans aren’t enthusiastic about the proposal either.

Senator John McCain of Arizona said, “I’d like to hear the details. What is this wall?”

Other cuts include $372 million for heating subsidies for the poor and $447 million in transit grants.

Democrats in the Senate have threatened to oppose any funding going to the border wall.
