Roswell man accused of murdering family extradited to US

The man suspected of killing his wife and his four daughters in Roswell, New Mexico is in the custody of US Marshals following his extradition to the US.

Juan David Villegas, 34, is facing with five counts of first-degree murder, court documents state.

“Today we begin the process of bringing justice Villegas who rocked the community of Roswell and the entire state when he allegedly murdered his own family and fled to Mexico,” said Attorney General Hector Balderas. “

Police identified the suspect’s wife as 34-year-old Cynthia Villegas. The daughters were identified as 14-year-old Yamilen, 11-year-old Cynthia Janeth, 7-year-old Abby, and 3-year-old Ida.

Family members said they could not reach the family by phone and went to check on them when they made the gruesome discovery.

Juan Villegas was taken into custody in Arizpe, Mexico shortly after the killings.

Court documents obtained by KOAT in Albuquerque state Cynthia Villegas told friends her relationship with her husband was deteriorating and he feared she was cheating on him.

Juan Villegas was unemployed for months and was “drinking heavily days before the shooting,” the court documents further state.

Cynthia Villegas asked her husband for a divorce just two days before the shooting, KOAT reported at the time.
