POLICE: Teen filed false police report regarding stolen cheer uniforms

Police arrested and charged a young woman accused of filing a false police report that resulted in officers responding to the Burglary of Habitation call.

It happened at about 2:00 am on April 15, 2017 at a residence on the 1700 block of Shawna Laurie.

18-year-old Gina Nicole Torrijos was charged with “False Report to Peace Officer.”

Police said officers began their investigation and learned Torrijos allegedly lied about the property reported stolen: cheer uniforms.

A complaint affidavit obtained by ABC-7 states Torrijos told responding police officers an unidentified man entered her home and removed two Riverside High School cheer uniforms from her bedroom dresser without consent.

Torrijos allegedly told officers she had also been receiving anonymous text messages from the man who stole the uniforms. The document further states Torrijos saw someone in her backyard attempting to remove her bedroom window’s screen as she was receiving the text messages.

Torrijos allegedly told police her boyfriend “chased away” the suspect in her backyard. Police detectives interviewed neighbors, who said they did not hear or see anything the day of the alleged burglary.

A detective interviewed the Riverside cheer coach, who allegedly stated Torrijos returned one of the two cheer uniforms reported stolen.

“The recovery and return of the property was not reported to the investigating officers further deceiving the investigating officers,” the complaint affidavit states.

The affidavit states Torrijos later changed her story and told investigators she made it up “to cover the fact that she wanted to avoid turning in her cheer uniforms to the school.”

During the alleged confession, Torrijos told investigators she was in possession of the outstanding uniform. The document states that soon after, Torrijos “again recanted and stated she could not find the still outstanding uniform.”

Torrijos was taken into custody on Friday, May 5th and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $5,000 bond.
