One man dies after being ejected from a vehicle

New Mexico State Police said Friday around 11 p.m. a fatal crash happened on Las Alturas Road south of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Police said a vehicle was traveling north on Las Alturas across from I-10 near mile marker 147. Police said the driver of the vehicle appeared to have been speeding and attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control while exiting the road. According to police, the vehicle then rolled ejecting two passengers. Police said the driver fled the scene.

The two passengers are identified as 22-year-old Erik Gonzalez-Botelo from Anthony, Texas and 21-year-old Victor Chavez from Berino, New Mexico. Police said the two men were not wearing seat-belts. Both were taken to Mountain View Hospital. Police said Chavez later died from his injuries. Gonzalez-Botelo received non-life threatening injuries.

State Police officers are working to identify the driver involved in the crash.
