Hazmat team examining unknown substance found at Border Patrol station

The Las Cruces Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Response Team is investigating an unknown substance found at the Border Patrol’s Las Cruces Station.

The substance, found in a container, was located in the field and taken to the Border Patrol Station by an employee, officials said.

At this point, it does not pose an immediate threat and firefighters are trying to determine exactly what it is, officials added.

The fire department has closed the Main Street entrance to the Border Patrol Station at 3120 N. Main Street.

A small portion of the parking lot at a nearby Walgreens pharmacy is also closed.

No injuries have been reported, officials said. No roadways have been closed.
