El Paso man accused of stealing semi, leading police on chase
The driver of an 18-wheeler that led police on a chase and crashed into multiple vehicles has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff, said authorities in Fort Worth, Texas.
The driver is identified as 35-year-old Jose Luis Cano Olivas from El Paso. The truck belongs to Pesado Transportation of Socorro, Texas.
Police said Olivas was behaving erratically. It’s not clear if he was under the influence or if he has a medical condition.
The chase started in Forth Worth and ended in Arlington.
Police said it shut down a portion of I-30 and “could have been catastrophic.”
A traffic officer tried to stop the semi in Fort Worth, but Olivas took off. He allegedly crashed into several vehicles during the chase that reportedly hit speeds well over 100 miles an hour.
12 people were injured in five separate crashes but no serious injuries were reported.
The owner of the company told ABC-7 he could not confirm if the driver was his employee or whether the truck was stolen, but an ABC-7 reporter saw a Texas Department of Transportation Employee leaving the man’s property in Socorro.
The Fort Worth Telegram reported the owner told them the truck was stolen.
