ELECTION PREVIEW: El Paso voters to elect new mayor, city reps

Voters in El Paso will elect a new mayor and at least three new city representatives Saturday.

Runoff elections are underway for the mayoral race as well as the city council seats for districts two, three, and four.

A special election is being held for District 8, the council seat vacated when City Rep. Cortney Niland announced she was resigning. The candidates in the district, which includes portions of West El Paso and Downtown, are Gilbert Guillen, Trini Acevedo, Adolfo Lopez, Cissy Lizarraga and Robert Cormell.

Dee Margo won they mayoral election May 6, 2017 but did not secure enough votes to avoid a runoff.

16,260 votes were cast in the mayoral election. Margo, who received 43 percent of the vote, won by 2,966 votes. David Saucedo won enough votes to force the runoff.

In District 2, which includes North Central El Paso, political newcommer Alexsandra Annello received 34.5 percent of the votes(623). Incumber Jim Tolbert received 32.7 percent of the vote (591). Annello defeated Tolbert by only 32 votes, not enough to avoid a runoff.

In the District 3, which covers portions of East-Central and the East Side, Cassandra Hernandez Brown garnered 935 votes (36 percent) during the May 6th election. Jaime Barceleau received 768 votes (29.6 percent).

In the District 4 race May 6th, a 31 vote difference separated candidates Shane Haggerty and Sam Morgan. Morgan received 872 votes (38.6 percent) while Haggerty received 841 votes (37.2 percent). Carl Robinson, the incumbent in District 4, could not run for reelection because he was termed out.

Voters Saturday will also decide races for Municipal Court No. 1, the Municipal Court of Appeals, the El Paso ISD Board of Trustees, District No. 4; the Ysleta ISD Board of Trustees, District No. 5; and El Paso Community College Board of Trustees, District No. 1.

ABC-7 will have the results of the election during ABC-7 at 10 with Josie Ortegon and Evan Folan.
