Documents: Drunk Driver crashed into bedroom, woman suffers fractured skull
A Northeast El Paso woman was pinned against a wall and suffered a fractured skull when an alleged drunk driver crashed into her bedroom, court documents obtained by ABC-7 state.
April Kriegbaum, 19, was rushed to University Medical Center for treatment. Police said the two suspects, Raul Calvetti, 25; and Amanda Aguirre, 26, ran away from the scene without rendering aid.
It all started the night of June 22, 2017 when Calvetti and Aguirre were arguing outside a 7-11 store near the apartment complex at 5010 Haggerty in Northeast El Paso.
Police say Calvetti assaulted Aguirre and three witnesses tried to intervene. Witnesses David Gordon, 17; Joshua Deardorff, 28; and Charles Wells, 18, told police the suspects turned on them.
“I could tell he was really drunk because he was slurring and stumbling bad as he got out of his car,” one of the witnesses told police.
Calvetti allegedly punched Gordon and Aguirre allegedly joined Calvetti in assaulting Gordon, court documents state. Gordon later told police he and his two friends walked away from the scene to the nearby apartment complex.
Deardorff told police that as they walked away, they noticed Calvetti driving a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer in their direction. Deardorff said he jumped out of the way to avoid being struck by Calvetti’s car. Court documents state
Deardorff told police Calvetti circled around several times in an effort to strike the group. Calvetti eventually struck Deardorff in the elbow with his vehicle, court documents state.
As Calvetti tried to flee from the scene, he allegedly crashed into an apartment, injuring Kriegbaum. The woman was sleeping inside her bedroom when the suspects crashed into it, court documents state. Kriegbaum, thrown across the room upon impact, was pinned in between the vehicle and a wall. The woman suffered a fractured skull.
After crashing into the apartment, Calvetti and Aguirre fled on foot without rendering aid, police said. Officers arrested the couple in a nearby neighborhood. Once in custody, Calvetti told police he ran away because he did not want to get beat up and allegedly admitted to drinking two beers, court documents state.
Documents also state officers reported the smell of alcohol coming from Calvetti and that while Calvetti was hospitalized, his eyes were “blood shot.” Calvetti was hospitalized because was also injured in the wreck.
Calvetti, the driver of the vehicle, is being charged with three counts of Aggravated Assault and one count of Intoxication Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. Aguirre is being charged with Assault.
